Fun fact: Wellesley’s population grew by over 80% during the 1920’s! With that population growth came great economic growth and with that came bigger beautiful homes!Bigger homes lead to having more and more “stuff” filling up every room in the house. Short of the cast of that Hoarders TV show, everybody can agree that clutter is NOT a good thing, nor is it necessary. In all actuality, it’s stressful! 65% of Americans feel that their homes could be more organized and less cluttered (You’re not alone).

Just like you know you should work out and stay healthy, it’s also a good idea to keep your home healthy as well. In other words, decluttering is like a cleanse for your home.

Below we will outline step-by-step excellent tips on how to declutter your home in Wellesley.

Step 1: Getting Started

Just like the Patriots did to win the Super Bowl this year, you too must make a plan. Go room by room and figure out which are the most cluttered, order them from most cluttered to least cluttered and that will be your roadmap on how to declutter your home in Wellesley. Personally, I like to start with the hard stuff first and then get to the easy stuff later. If you prefer the quick wins first, then start there. The important thing excuting a plan so that you’re more efficient when decluttering.

Step 2: Set Goals and a Timeline

As you go through each room checking the clutter levels, take notes on which rooms might to be become mini projects. For example, in your living room you might still have a big clunky TV stand that’s barely hiding all the wires attached to the TV and the wall. Maybe a suggestion is to take the next step, purchase a TV wall mount (generally under $100), hang up that TV and hide all those wires behind the wall! Same thing goes for your garage. Do you have bikes leaning up against the wall in the corner or storage containers piled on top of each other taking up space? Maybe its time to get some shelves built and to get a bike rack installed so that your bikes are hanging neatly and easily accessible. Whatever the mini project, take notes and make a specific timeline of when you’ll get these things done.

Step 3: Create a system to segement your stuff!

  • Things you’ll keep
  • Things you’ll donate or throw away
  • Things you’ll put in storage

For my house, our rule is that if it hasn’t been used in the last 6 months then maybe it’s time to donate or throw away. This rule works great for old DVD’s, video games, books and magazines. As you walk around your home you’ll start placing things into these three categories and before you know it you will have completely decluttered your home in Wellesley!

Step 4: Now it's time to relax...

You did it!

Take a deep breath, follow these steps and you will have learned how to declutter your home in Wellesley! Just remember, make a plan, choose your mini projects to get done, create a system and most importantly enjoy your new stress-free home!
